ROAD MAINTENANCE EQUIPMENT OPERATOR I (RMEO I)

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is routine manual work involving responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of road maintenance equipment. The work is performed under general supervision in accordance with established policies and procedures. Supervision on the level of team leader may be exercised over the activities of laborers. Performs related duties as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Operates road maintenance equipment such as heavy dump trucks, wheel loaders, tractors, rollers and other motor vehicles in connection with the transportation of various materials (blacktop, salt, sand and gravel) and equipment;
  • Operates motor vehicles with snow plow, sander and other attachments in the removal of snow and ice;
  • Operates motorized mowing equipment;
  • Rakes, tamps and shovels asphalt, and assists in patching, resurfacing and grading of gravel and asphalt roads;
  • Assists in the maintenance and repair of sewer and catch basins;
  • Digs and refills trenches for sewers and drainage;
  • Removes snow from roads and sidewalks and sands icy pavements;
  • Cuts grass, rakes leaves, trims shrubs and trees, spades flower beds and assists in other grounds maintenance activities;
  • Assists with tree planting and wood cutting;
  • Assists in the installation and maintenance of traffic signs and markings;
  • Performs manual labor, such as loading motor vehicles, digging ditches, and cleaning culverts;
  • Performs preventive maintenance on assigned equipment;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the operation of automotive equipment used in road maintenance work; good knowledge of the geography of the area; ability to operate road maintenance equipment; ability to understand and follow simple oral and written directions; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position; mechanical aptitude; manual dexterity; industry; willingness to respond to emergencies; willingness to work outside under adverse weather conditions; dependability;.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

One (1) year of experience operating road maintenance equipment.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

Possession of a valid New York State Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), with endorsements appropriate to the type of motor equipment being operated, is required at the time of appointment to this position and throughout the term of employment in this position.

TRAINEE NOTE:

In the event a candidate is lacking the required experience, the candidate may be appointed to a traineeship of up to one (1) year, operating road maintenance equipment to the satisfaction of the appointing authority, before being appointed to the full title.

NOTE: Candidates for appointment are required to participate in and pass a pre-duty drug screening.

NOTE: Candidates for appointment must consent to the running of a full query of the FMCSA Commercial Driver’s License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
