PUBLIC HEALTH PROGRAM AIDE

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  Work involves providing support to professional public health department personnel by performing a variety of sub-professional tasks directly related to the professional work. Responsibilities include public outreach, clerical support and a variety of sub-professional tasks directly relating to public health education and nursing. Work is performed under direct supervision of the Supervising Public Health Educator and/or the Supervising Public Health Nurse. Supervision is not a responsibility of this class. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Specific work activities and responsibilities will vary according to program assignment.

Typical duties may include any of the following:

  • Assists in the oversight and carrying-out of grants;
  • Maintains grant related documents;
  • Communicates with local municipal agencies, vendors and New York State;
  • Performs a variety of clerical tasks, such as filing and copying forms and reports,
  • forwarding documents to professional staff for review and follow-up;
  • Assists with public outreach and disease control efforts;
  • Assists with investigation and contact identification related to disease control efforts when necessary;
  • Remains up to date with New York State and Federal disease investigation, testing, and reporting practices and requirements;
  • Communicates with staff within the Education and Nursing sections of the Health Department to remain abreast of active disease prevention in municipal agencies;
  • Performs outreach at local High schools to recruit volunteers;
  • Researches volunteer training programs;
  • Organizes training program opportunities for volunteers;
  • Updates and maintains internal volunteer database;
  • Communicates with and provides support to volunteers;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Working understanding of the field of public health; working understanding of disease control and prevention; familiarity with County and community resources; ability to enter data, organize and maintain records, and prepare reports; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to follow directions both orally and in writing; accuracy; reliability; tact and courtesy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and two (2) years of work experience which involved use of computer applications to manage data, maintain records and/or prepare reports.

SUBSTITUTION NOTE: Post-secondary level (High School) education may be substituted for each year of the required experience on a year for year basis as indicated above based on thirty (30) college credits per year of experience.

PLEASE NOTEYour degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
