PUBLIC HEALTH CORPS FELLOW

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves performance of support service functions associated with the administration of public health services and programs. The purpose of the class is to relieve the professional staff of the more routine duties and to allow real-world experience in the field of public health. Incumbents assist professional staff with client case management, monitor reports of essential public health information, produce communications, and maintain records regarding such information as required. Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines, under direct supervision of the Public Health corps Fellowship Local Coordinator and higher-level Health Department staff. Supervision of others is not a function of the position. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

Specific work activities and responsibilities will vary according to the Public Health Fellow’s project assignments. Typical duties and projects may include any of the following:

  • Program development, analysis, and evaluation based on measurable goals and objectives;
  • Recommending new or modified policies and procedures;
  • Reviews and drafts plans including emergency preparedness, needs assessments, ect;
  • Participating in daily administrative management operations within a department;
  • Data collection, analysis, and evaluation,; including qualitative data;
  • Creates and disseminates materials to communicate materials to the public;
  • Implementation of technology;
  • Public outreach and disease control efforts;
  • Participation in education opportunities as required.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICSWorking understanding of the field of public health; Working knowledge of public health programs and services; working understanding of disease control and prevention; ability to analyze and organize data and prepare records and reports; ability to learn and use computer software and perform web research; ability to prepare informational materials on public health programs and issues; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with the public; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; ability to follow directions both orally and in writing; good listening skills, social perceptiveness; tact; confidentiality; good judgment; reliability; accuracy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Either

  1. Associate’s Degree or higher in public administration, health administration, public health, health education, health science, nursing, epidemiology, nutrition, human services or a related field; or
  2. Graduation from high school or possession of a comparable diploma and two (2) years of full-time work experience which involved assisting in the administration of public or community health or social programs; or
  3. An equivalent combination of training and experience.

PLEASE NOTEYour degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education.
