LABORER

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:  This is routine manual work requiring physical endurance and a willingness to perform unskilled tasks.  Work is performed under the immediate supervision in accordance with well established procedures. Performs related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only)

  • Assists with Road Maintenance Program, including work with concrete and asphalt; drainage & sewer maintenance and repair; patching, resurfacing, grading of roads; snow removal and sanding; installation and maintenance of traffic signs and markings;
  • Flags at maintenance and construction sites;
  • Operates various types of mechanized equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, chainsaws, etc.;
  • Assists with grounds maintenance programs, including mowing, raking, trimming, planting, spading of plants, shrubs, trees, flowers;
  • Assists in the removal of snow and ice which may include the operation of small trucks and/or other snow removal equipment, as assigned;
  • Assists with building maintenance and construction activities
  • Performs a variety of farm duties including but not limited to animal care and crop production;
  • Performs upkeep to farm structures in the form of painting and minor repair work;
  • Performs general janitorial duties such as cleaning public restrooms, picking up ground litter, emptying trash receptacles and removing graffiti;
  • May construct and maintain stone walls and stonework;
  • Performs a variety of related activities as required.

Work activities that do not appear above are not excluded as appropriate work assignments, as long as they can be reasonably understood to be within the logical limits of the job.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:   Ability to follow instructions; willingness to consistently perform routine manual work; ability to operate a motor vehicle; ability to operate various types of mechanized equipment; ability to lift heavy weights; willingness to work under all weather conditions; reliability; physical endurance.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: There is no minimum experience, education or training, but some experience in heavy manual labor is desirable.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At the time of appointment to this position and throughout the term of employment in this position, possession of a current valid New York State Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s license may be required.
