About Us
The County Social Services Department, open
from 9am to 5pm Monday through Friday, provides the following
services to County residents. No fees are charged, unless
otherwise indicated.
- Family Assistance - Financial assistance to help
children in families without sufficient means of support,
which may be due to absence of a parent, unemployment of
principal wage earner, or the parent's incapacity.
- Safety Net - A program of financial assistance to needy
individuals and families who do not meet the requirements of
ADC program and who are not eligible for Supplemental
Security Income (a federal program for the aged, blind and
disabled, administered by the Social Security
Administration).
- Home Energy Assistance (HEAP) - A program providing
annual one-time payments to help with energy costs of
low-income households during the fuel season.
- Food Stamps - A program that enables low-income
households to buy nutritious food.

Medicaid - A program providing medical services to the
medically needy.
- Child Support - Provides for a full range of child
support enforcement and collection services, including field
investigation, legal representation, enforcement, paternity
establishment, support establishment, support collection and
locating absent parents. (Fees are charged for legal
services for private clients only.)
- Child Protective Services - Receives reports of child
abuse around the clock (via the Putnam County Sheriff's
Department after 5pm and on weekends). The purpose of this
program is to protect children from abuse and neglect. (In
an emergency, dial 9-1-1!)
- Children's Services - Foster care, day care,
preventative services, adoption services, casework
counseling to families in need of preventing out-of-home
placements without regard to income.
- Adult Protective Services - A program to protect adults
18 years of age and older from abuse and neglect. The
Department responds within 72 hours of receipt of the
report.
- Housing Program - Houses the homeless, searches for
permanent housing, and prevents homelessness caused by
utility shut-offs, evictions and back rent. (In an
emergency, dial 9-1-1!)
