The recycling program is currently overseen by the
Putnam County Department of Health.
The Putnam County Department of Solid Waste (Department) develops and maintains comprehensive waste management programs for the residential, commercial, institutional and industrial sectors of Putnam County.
As set forth by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, the County's comprehensive waste management programs follow the waste management hierarchy of first reducing the amount of waste we generate, then reusing waste stream items whenever possible and finally recycling all materials for which economic markets exist.
The Department emphasizes recycling as the primary program for reducing the amount of waste for disposal by all sectors of the County. Therefore the focus of education is on recycling programs and activities.
The Department also oversees two full-time litter cleanup crews operating as part of the Keep Putnam Beautiful partnership campaign. These crews clean litter from all roadsides within the County on a full-time, daily basis
