This department handles the following problems consumers may have:

• Home Improvement Contractor Registration - The Department has a mandatory contractor registration program to assure that all contractors who work in Putnam County are insured, bonded and have workers' compensation insurance. They also offer a program of mediation between the contractor and consumer when consumer complaints arise. There is a fee for registration, but not for mediation. Call for more details.
  
• Weights and Measures Device Inspection - They conduct a mandatory commercial device inspection and testing program which includes scales, fuel dispensing devices, fuel oil trucks, and package weight checking. They investigate inquiries regarding the accuracy of commercial weighing and measuring devices. These services require a fee, but there is no fee for investigative testing.
  
• Motor Fuel Quality - The Department ensures that all service stations in Putnam County that dispense motor fuels have their products tested by a certified lab periodically to insure quality and proper octane.
  
• Item Pricing/Scanner Accuracy - This is the department to which you direct complaints regarding item pricing and scanner accuracy in retail stores, pursuant to Putnam County laws. There is no fee.
  
• Complaint Resolution and Consumer Education - The Department offers a complaint resolution service to resolve disputes between consumers and producers of goods and services. They make available information about appropriate outside agencies and resources.
