HOW TO OBTAIN A MASTER PLUMBING/MECHANICAL TRADES LICENSE

 

FILL OUT AND SUBMIT THE STEP ONE APPLICATION, THE FEE IS $150.00 MADE OUT TO THE COMMISSIONER OF FINANCE.

APPLICATIONS MUST BE APPROVED BY THE BOARD. PROOF OF EXPERIENCE MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE APPLICATION. (EXAMPLES: NOTARIZED LETTERS FROM PREVIOUS EMPLOYERS, W-2’S, AND SOCIAL SECURITY RECORDS. YOU MAY ATTEND A BOARD MEETING FOR AN INTERVIEW IF YOU CANNOT PRODUCE ANY OF THESE ITEMS).

  

THE FOLLOWING EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED:

  • PLUMBING – The applicant must have at least 9 years’ experience in the trade. Must be at least 21 years of age and pass the appropriate test. (Journeyman registrations required – 21-years old and 5 years’ experience necessary)
  • HVAC AND REFRIGERATION– The applicant must have at least 7 years’ experience in the trade and have an EPA Card (II, III or Universal).  Must be at least 21 years of age and pass the appropriate test. (Journeyman registrations required – 21-years old and 5 years’ experience necessary)
  • HEATING – The applicant must have at least 7 years’ experience in the trade.  Must be at least 21 years of age and pass the appropriate test. (Journeyman registrations required – 21-years old and 5 years’ experience necessary)
  • N.O.R.A. CERTIFICATION – The applicant must have 2 years’ experience in the trade. This certification allows you to work on oil burners only.  You must submit your N.O.R.A. Silver Certification card or higher as proof of completion. (Journeyman registrations required – 21-years old and 2 years’ experience necessary)
  •  LP GAS LICENSE – The applicant must have five years’ experience in the trade. Must be at least 21 years of age, pass the appropriate test and provide proof of successful completion of CETP. (Journeyman registrations required – 21-years old and 2 years’ experience necessary)
  • WATER WELL DRILLING INCLUDING GEOTHERMAL & PUMP LICENSE – The applicant must be at least 21 years of age and possess a minimum of two years’ experience in the drilling industry.  Applicant must also pass two tests with the National Ground Water Association, Water Systems Council or New York Department of Conservation with a grade of 70% or better. If you are applying for a Geothermal Drilling license, one test must be on Geothermal. (No Journeymen)
  • WATER TREATMENT LICENSE – Applicants for must be at least 21 years of age, possess a minimum of two years’ experience in the water treatment industry, and pass two exams given by the Water Quality Association with a passing grade of 70% or better. (No Journeymen)
  • SHEET METAL LICENSE – Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, possess a minimum of seven years’ experience working with sheet metal and pass the appropriate test. (Journeyman registrations required – 21-years old and 5 years’ experience necessary)
  • FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM CONTRACTOR – Must be at least 23 years old. Must submit proof that he/she holds a NICET III (National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies) certification in water based system layout for installation of systems.  Any connection to a potable water source must be made by a Licensed Master Plumber. (No Journeymen – apprentices cannot be left alone on a job)
  • FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM INSPECTOR – The applicant must be at least 21 years of age and submit proof that he/she holds a NICET II Certification in inspection and testing. (No Journeymen – apprentices cannot be left alone on a job)

 

ONCE YOU HAVE RECEIVED WRITTEN CONFIRMATION THAT YOU HAVE PASSED THE EXAM WITH A 70% OR BETTER, OR SUBMITTED ALL PROOF OF CERTIFICATIONS, THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IS REQUIRED TO RECEIVE YOUR LICENSE, OR CERTIFICATION.

1) THE FINAL-STEP APPLICATION ALONG WITH A CHECK FOR $500.00 MADE OUT TO THE COMMISSIONER OF FINANCE (This includes 1 vehicle decal)

2) ADDITIONAL VEHICLE DECALS ARE $6.00 EACH

3) $1,000,000.00 LIABILITY INSURANCE

(Certificate holder- Putnam County Plumbing Board, 110 Old Rt. 6, Bldg #3 Carmel, New York 10512)

4) WORKERS COMPENSATION FORM (C105.2 OR U26.3) OR NYS EXEMPTION FORM CE-200 (OBTAINED ONLINE AT http://www.wcb.ny.gov)

(Exemption form is used when Workers Compensation is not required)

5) LICENSE AND PERMIT BOND FOR $25,000.00

(Obligee must be Putnam County Consumer Affairs)

6) CHILD SUPPORT FORM TO BE SIGNED (MANDATED BY NYS)

7) REGISTRATION OF VEHICLES THAT ARE GOING TO BE ON JOB SITES IN PUTNAM COUNTY (DECALS)

8) A PHOTO IS REQUIRED FOR YOUR ID CARD. THIS CAN BE TAKEN IN OUR OFFICE OR YOU CAN SEND A DIGITAL PICTURE IN JPEG FORMAT TO ellen.sorrento@putnamcountyny.com.

9) DRIVERS LICENSE FROM THE ADDRESS WHERE YOU RESIDE. IF THE ADDRESS ON YOUR LICENSE DOES NOT MATCH THE ADDRESS WHERE YOU RESIDE, FURTHER PROOF OF RESIDENCY IS REQUIRED.

 

SHELVING

To shelve a license a signed affidavit must be submitted for every year you wish to shelve your license. You may unshelf your license anytime you are ready to use it again. You will need follow all the instructions listed above. If shelved by December 31st, the shelving fee is $50.00 a year. Late fees apply.

 

RECIPROCATION

Rockland County – You will need follow all the instructions listed above.  You must also submit a copy of your current Rockland County license and copy of your exam results.
